Measure the finished cake, not the recipe
Cake weight is not a dependable box-size measurement. Two cakes with the same weight can have different diameters, filling heights, frosting profiles, boards and toppers.
Complete the cake—or build an accurate mock-up—before taking the final width and height measurements. Include decorations that extend beyond the sponge.
Use this five-step measurement method
- Measure the widest point. Include frosting, side decorations and anything that projects beyond the cake.
- Measure the cake board. Record its full length and width because the board often controls the required box footprint.
- Measure complete height. Start underneath the board and finish at the highest stable topper or decoration.
- Add handling clearance. Delicate finishes should not rub against the walls, lid or viewing window.
- Compare with stated dimensions. Match your measurements with the dimensions on the individual product page rather than estimating from an image.
Check these details before ordering
- Whether the listed dimensions are internal or external
- The assembled box height and window position
- The cake board footprint, including square corners
- The exact pack quantity and current stock state
- Whether the box will be carried by hand, car or delivery rider
Test one box before a large production run
For a repeat menu item, assemble one box and test it with the actual board, finished decoration and delivery method. Record the product URL and dimensions that worked so the bakery team can reorder consistently.
If no ready-stock size fits, send the finished dimensions, quantity, artwork and timeline through the custom packaging enquiry. Feasibility and minimum quantities should be confirmed before planning production.
Cake Box Size Guide FAQs
Should a cake box match the cake or the cake board?+
It must fit the complete cake board as well as the decorated cake. Measure the board footprint and make sure the assembled box provides practical clearance.
Can cake weight determine box size?+
No. Weight does not reliably describe finished width, height, board size or decorations. Measure the finished presentation instead.
How much extra height should I allow?+
Allow enough clearance that the highest stable decoration does not touch the lid or window. The exact allowance depends on the decoration and handling method.
What if a ready-stock cake box does not fit?+
Submit the internal dimensions, quantity, artwork and timeline through the custom packaging enquiry so manufacturing feasibility can be reviewed.
